Anytime I am introduced to a new site, blog, influencer, etc., I always ask myself a few questions. I want to know:

  • What is this person trying to accomplish? (Goal)
  • Why is this person doing what they are doing? (Intent)

By applying the same standards to HolSpan, I hope to provide a helpful background that enhances the patient experience. As a busy urologist (surgical subspecialist), my time with patients (like most doctors) is very limited. Although I strive to be very effective and efficient with my time, there is often very little time to dig into the deeper issues that I want to convey to patients. Employing technology responsibly seems like the most effective approach to address this concern.

The main reason for HolSpan is to be able to present patients with a repository of information that they can reference after the office visit has passed. Another key point was attempting to present complex information in a practical way that is approachable by many. This outreach is tailored for patients rather than exclusively for doctors or experts. While I'll include references for those seeking deeper technical details, my main goal is to keep things as straightforward as I can.

I am passionate about the topic of male health and wellness. I believe men have been underserved as currently the topic is typically reduced to expensive options focused mainly on sex and erections. My wife and I have 3 young sons that we are raising to be healthy young men. They will face rising rates of obesity, worsening fertility rates, declining testosterone levels, and worsening parameters for general and metabolic health. They and future generations deserve better. Consistent, unified, and practical information regarding establishing good baseline health (grounded by wellness principles) is lacking and much needed to reach men truly. Selfishly, as an aging man, I also want to know how to navigate these worsening general health parameters in the most effective way possible. Many of the principles reviewed within future content have indeed been transformational for me. I am quite literally a “practitioner” of many of the presented interventions. 

The HolSpan blogs will take a closer look at many recurring themes, including:

  • Approaches for a healthy lifestyle
  • Removing harmful inputs and adding in helpful inputs
  • Free/inexpensive options 
  • Practical suggestions (simple interventions that hold the potential for disproportionately positive results)
  • Interconnectedness: The theory that parts rely on intimate connection within a whole, surpassing their individual existence or understanding without reference to the greater whole; in medicine, it's the holistic treatment of a person, considering mental and social aspects alongside symptoms.
  • Healthspan as a lifestyle. Many recommendations “span” multiple disciplines, pillars, and aspects of our days and lives.
