The mental state serves as the “master switch” that can influence all processes downstream from it. The brain is that master switch that uses our nervous system to sense our environment.
A common scenario that I use in my practice to illustrate this effect when addressing conventional medical problems is a man who suffers through the recent death of a spouse. For a given period the patient can experience a disinterest in sex, erratic sexual performance, and mood changes. This does not necessarily mean he has an underlying problem with erections or testosterone levels. In many instances, these symptoms improve over time as the patient processes the loss. This example demonstrates the impact of our environment and circumstances on symptoms.
The biopsychosocial model illustrates how the confluence of our biology, surroundings, and interpretation of the world impact our physical and mental well-being. Our surroundings are filled with stressors. Some stress can be positive and adaptive (eustress, growth mindset). Overwhelming chronic stress tends to be harmful and maladaptive. Humans appear to be well suited to handle short-term stress well but not chronic stress. It is these chronic stressors that currently fill our current existence (work stressors, family stressors, social media, etc.).
Mental Health is typically overlooked as many people do not feel comfortable confronting something that they may mistakenly feel is just “in their head.” HolSpan embraces the complementary role that our mental state and mental health have concerning common conditions and the way we perceive ourselves and the world. The HolSpan approach acknowledges that what is in your head (psychological), around your head/body (social), and within your body (biological) all matter immensely.
HolSpanMD counsels patients on a personal level to achieve their optimal metabolic health, focusing on precision wellness and preventative care. Reach out to us today to schedule an appointment or ask a question.
